Introducing the exhibition “Spontaneous Structures”

“Spontaneous structures are based on a productive dichotomy. That which is unplanned is opposed to that which is organised, the natural occurrence to the strategic arrangement, the potentially disruptive event to the fixed order. Yet beyond this opposition, the non linear repetition and organisation of events also generates structures. These are in constant movement, as their constituent interactions continuously modify their balance.

The artists in Spontaneous Structures explore these creative principles through a scrutiny of mind processes and body experience, of urban development and natural growth forms, of geometrical frames and random appropriations, in an attempt to demonstrate the dynamics of aesthetic energy.”

Gabriel Gee has a PhD in contemporary art history from the université Paris X Nanterre (2008). His current research interests include 20th century British and Irish art, the relation between the visuals arts and historical discourse, as well as the relation between culture, politics, and economics in the transitional post-industrial period

Meanwhile Whitechapel

Meanwhile Space is a community interest company working to activate vacant property and sites with uses that benefit the community, while something else is waiting to happen. They either get directly involved in projects by taking on the risk and rateliabilities of empty spaces to deliver reanimated, active spaces, or work at arm’s length in an advisory capacity, or somewhere in the middle, as a legal intermediary facilitating activity between landlords and projects.

I first came across this company mid 2010 when, thanks to the Shoreditch Trust, the Meanwhile Space team made a unit on Hoxton Street their home from April to June 2010 and launched the first Meanwhile Centre.

On thursday 3d of February, some friends and I went to the launch of their new space in Whitechapel. The  huge retail space is right in the heart of Whitechapel, next to Brick Lane and the Whitechapel Gallery. They have a 2 month lease with Workspace Group. Downstairs there is a huge basement for office space and hot desking.

We were so impressed and excited by the space that I went back the day after to meet up with Jessica, my contact at Meanwhile. I booked easter week end  (22-23-24th April), with the intention to organise a group exhibition.
